10cc – Rubber Bullets

The BBC, so fond of banning songs in this Whitehouse era, didn’t actually ban or censor Rubber Bullets despite believing it to be about the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

In fact it’s about an imaginary prison riot in America of the kind that featured in old Jimmy Cagney films – the clue lies in the strong American accents adopted by these lads from Stockport, and Americanisms including “county jail” and “national guard.”

Watching this Top of the Pops clip I’m transfixed not so much by the song as the inability of anyone in the audience to clap in time.

Especially the plump girl in the white top with a blonde bob, who just randomly moves her hands back and forth, presumably under strict instructions from the famously severe floor managers to look as if she is having fun.

It’s also got one of those classic TOTP moments where there’s a solo – an extraordinary double-speed guitar solo by Eric Stewart – while the cameraman focuses on a close-up of a completely different musician (Lol Creme).

Watch out, too, for the fact that none of the instruments are actually plugged into anything – and Kevin Godley’s talent for drumming without touching the drums or cymbals.
