Bob Andy – You Don’t Know

I’d had this catchy song lodged in my memory for about 40 years without remembering who or what it was until one day it popped up on a reggae compilation I’dbought.

Bob Andy was one of the superstars of Jamaican music and died in early 2020.

One of the original Paragons, the rocksteady vocal group who first sang The Tide Is High (written and co-sung by John Holt) back in 1967, he’s probably best-known for his hit singles Young Gifted And Black and Pied Piper as one half of Bob & Marcia (Griffiths).

But this 1973 tune has always been one of my favourites, with a heartfelt vocal filled with yearning, a powerful and poignant lyric – something of a rarity in reggae music – and a nice dub produced some 20 years later by the Mad Professor.
