Lipps Inc – Funkytown

Funkytown is a slice of cheesy disco fun that’s almost perfect in its simplicity – and the only hit for disco group Lipps Inc.

There’s nothing to it, but it’s brilliant: a one-note bassline, a ten-note synth melody and a simple aspirational lyric: “Won’t you take me to Funkytown?”

Why, do I hear you ask? The answer is equally simple: “To keep me movin’, keep me groovin’ with some energy.”

If they’d invented the word “banger” back then, this would have been one. It sold eight million copies and topped the charts almost everywhere.

Not here though, where it stalled at No.2, being kept off the top by Don McLean’s dreary version of Roy Orbison’s classic Crying.

A prize if you could have named the singer… Cynthia Johnson, who doesn’t appear in either of the official videos for the song. This isn’t one of them.
