Lippy Lou – Liberation

12th June 2023 · 1990s, 1995, Dance, Music

Rewind to 1995 and here, with a little assistance from Boy George, is Lippy Lou with her ragga-rave crossover coming-out anthem Liberation.

Released on George’s label, More Protein, it was a huge dance hit and a modest pop hit for the teenage Louise Neale, fusing ravey Eurodance beats, Jamaican dancehall vocals… and rock guitar.

Her explanation of the song, which has even ruder lyrics in its original form, takes us back to a time where we passed on news by writing it down in things called “letters.”

She said: “I first thought of making this record to save on all the stamps I’d have to buy to tell everyone back home about my sexual preferences.

“I had a moment of worry, but it disappeared pretty quickly. I’m proud of this record. It makes an important statement about freedom and acceptance.”

It does indeed. Sadly, Lou disappeared from popworld after just one more single – Freaks – adapted from the Was (Not Was) single Out Come The Freaks, and never even got around to releasing an album.
