Sweet – The Six Teens

14th February 2021 · 1970s, 1974, Glam, Music

This was far from being the biggest hit by The Sweet. But it’s their best. It’s also the best song Chinn & Chapman ever wrote.
It might not have the urgent thrill of bangers like Blockbuster, Ballroom Blitz and Teenage Rampage but it’s got an emotional depth the others never strive for.

Perhaps because of the age I was when it came out (16), or perhaps because of the impassioned vocal performances of Brian Connolly and Steve Priest (finally toning down the campness), I find it powerfully poignant.

It’s a hymn to youthful idealism, to young love, and to dreams of a future where anything seems possible amid the revolutionary fervour if 1968

It’s certainly the best song by Chapman and Chinn, and the last the hit songwriting team wrote for Sweet, as well as the last to be produced with Phil Wainman.

To celebrate their new start, they ditched most of their Glam Rock trappings, looking and spunding more like a metal band in this video.

Especially on the song’s final section. Particularly drummer Mick Tucker, attacking his vast kit like a man possessed.
