The Models – Freeze / Man Of The Year

Delving deep into my collection of punk singles, I find the double-A-side Freeze / Man Of The Year – the only release by The Models.

It’ another of the early singles on Miles Copeland’s Step Forward label, along with Chelsea’s Right To Work and The Cortinas’ Fascist Dictator, in the summer of 1977.

The Models are the band that Marco Pirroni played guitar in after hi debut with Siouxsie & The Banshees at the 100 Club punk festival (when Sid Vicious played drums) before going on to bigger and beter things with Adam & The Ants.

They formed early in 1977 in Harrow, initially under the name The Beastly Cads, but changed to The Models after only two gigs, consisting of Cliff Fox (vocals, guitar), Marco Pirroni (guitar), Mick Allen (bass) and Terry Day (drums).

The highlight of their career was probably this John Peel session in July 1977, adding two more songs – Censorship and Brainwash – to their recorded oeuvre.

They sensibly decided not to include their self-penned song I Wanna Form My Own Nazi Party – not quite what it seems but actually (apparently) a critique of punks (including Siouxsie) who set out to offend by wearing swastika armbands.

Pirroni and Allen, who had gone to art school together, later formed Rema-Rema, with Pirroni then reuniting with drummer Terry Day (aka Terry Lee Miall) in a new-look Adam & The Ants while Allen formed the not-as-famous Wolfgang Press.

Anyway, here they are, along with a reminder of what made listening to John Peel so addictively entertaining.
