I’m not the biggest fan of those bands with only two members – White Stripes, Royal Blood, Slaves/Soft Play – though I’m quite fond of Sleaford Mods. Here’s Big Special – another two-piece with only one musician. And I love it!
Uncompromising and defiantly working class, Birmingham boys Joe Hicklin on “vocals and resident heartthrob” (his words) and Cal Moloney whose role is “drums, DJ, hype man and designated driver” (his words), are unlike anything else you’ve heard – part poetry, part punk, part hip-hop, with undertones of folk and blues.
Joe and Cal have been in bands for 15 years, but had not played together for a decade when they reunited in the middle of the pandemic; Big Special is a lockdown project that grew out of experimenting with sounds and structuring poems into songs.
They’re new – very new – having only released their debut EP Doom Song in April this year, and Lammo was all over the single This Here Ain’t Water on 6Music. It was followed by a second called Black Country Gothic, which spawned another single, the somewhat less radio-friendly Shithouse (opening line: “Never in a million fucking years did I ever think I’d ever see your fucking face again.”
Now comes their third release of the year, and surely the best song title of the year: Desperate Breakfast. And, with that title, you just know it’s a banger. What’s not to love about a tune whose opening line is: “Prop me up in a greasy spoon”.
They’re supporting Benefits on 19 October at OSLO in Hackney, and I intend to be there.
