Bnny – Something Blue

This is very lovely, with a dark undercurrent. Bnny’s previous album, which was a gruelling grief-filled reflection on death. This is about trying to make a fresh start when you’re running from the past… “but the past keeps catching up.”

Bnny are a new name to me but one I intend to follow from now on. Their music is appealingly and deliberately rudimentary, inspired by the Velvets (which is probably why I like it), and this song is about the struggle of escaping your past.

Bnny (formerly Bunny) began as a quintet in Chicago and are now a trio led by Jess Viscius with her twin sister Alexa, and they’re about to release their second album, from which this is taken.

Their first album, Everything, released in 2021, was a dark grief-filled affair inspired both by Jess’s difficult relationship with her partner, fellow Chicago musician Trey Gruber, and by his death at the age of 26.

New album One Million Love Songs is what you might call her recovery album, filled with songs about finding love after loss, and (as she puts it) “trying to have fun with a broken heart.”

As for the late Trey, his own band Parent only ever released one song called I Tried, whose lyric begins, poignantly, with the words: “I tried to die.”
