DBX – Losing Control

12th January 2024 · 1990s, 1994, Dance, Music

When it comes to minimal techno it don’t come much more minimal than Daniel Bell. And sometimes – driving at night, for example – that’s just what you want to hear. Well, I do.

One of the pioneers of the genre back in Detroit back in the early ’90s, Bell was born in California before moving to the Motor City and going to college in Canada, where he started producing hip-hop records and developing his own music in parallel.

Unlike most dance DJs he’s influenced as much by minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass as by the house music and techno coming out of Chicago and Detroit in the ’80s.

This track, Losing Control from back in 1994 – released under the alias DBX – is his trademark tune and represents his signature style of minimalist grooves, eerie atmospherics, and distorted vocal effects.
More recently, Bell moved to Berlin, home of modern techno.
