I’m often drawn to a band by their name, their song and album titles and their artwork. So it was no surprise I loved Death In Vegas when they released their debut album Dead Elvis.
They were pretty much my favourite band around the time The Contino Sessions came out in 1999. And Aisha, with its creepy lyrics about a serial killer who’s got out of jail, its creepy vocal by Iggy Pop, and even creepier woman-in-peril video by fashion photographer Terry Richardson, was my favourite tune.
It was a few years later that Richardson, who had a stellar career in fashion before shooting music videos for Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Sky Ferreira, among others, was hit with multiple allegations of sexual abuse of his models, ending his career.
Unusually, he actually appears in this video, when the terrified woman in the red dress runs into the house and attacks the crew filming her, Richardson stepping in to calm her down while her make-up is reapplied for the final section of the video.
I remember going to interview the duo of Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes at their office/studio somewhere in Clerkenwell, housing a treasure trove of equipment packed into a room the size of a cupboard. It amazed me that, working in this subterranean lair without any sign of musical instruments, they could create a record like this.
The first album, Dead Elvis, was great too, especially the single Dirt. But DIV really took off when Fearless found a new production partner in Tim Holmes and hired celebrity guests like Iggy Pop and Bobby Gillespie, Jim Reid and Dot Allison, to sing on the tunes, with guitar and bass by Ian Button and Mat Flint.
The formula was extended on their third album, Scorpio Rising, with the addition of Hope Sandoval, Paul Weller and Liam Gallagher, the duo hitting it off with Liam so well that there were plans – later abandoned, and then revived a few years later with Fearlesds – for them to produce the next Oasis album.
Now effectively an electronic solo project for Fearless with help from collaborators, his most recent album Transmission featured vocals from former porn star Sasha Grey and remixes by Chris & Cosey of Throbbing Gristle.
