This song caught my ear on the radio the other day – especially that bubbling bassline. But also the whole thing: it’s a happy, silly, dancey, disco tune for a summer’s day.
It reminds me of the joyful eclecticism of The Phenomenal Handclap Band whom I discovered in New York about 15 years ago (and later saw here with my friend Stephen Spencer Ryde).
Unlike them, this lot come from Sheffield, and seem to have a jokey aspect to what they do: their debut album, “LABPD (Or, Band On The Hunt), had a theme about the band being in a police chase with Paul McCartney.
You can see it in their videos, which are joyful and playful and home-made and make the band seem like a gang of pals making music for the sheer fun of it. And I’m sure that’s true.
Their second album – Free Summer – has the more accessible theme of “Summer” and an ambition to “make people move” and comes out next weekend.
Inspired originally by Talking Heads and LCD Soundsystem, LAB have an eclectic sound combining all sorts of influences; latterly Latin elements following a trip to Cuba.
