Lipps Inc – Funkytown

27th June 2023 · 1979, Disco, Music

Back from a week in Cornwall but still in a summer mood, so here’s today’s slice of cheesy disco fun – the only hit for Lipps Inc.

There’s nothing much to it, but it’s brilliant in its simplicity: a one-note bassline, a ten-note synth melody and a simple aspirational lyric: “Won’t you take me to Funkytown?”

Why, do I hear you ask? The answer is equally simple: “To keep me movin’, keep me groovin’ with some energy.”

If they’d invented the word “banger” back in 1979, this would have been one. It sold eight million copies and topped the charts almost everywhere.
Not here though, where it stalled at No.2, being kept off the top by Don McLean’s dreary version of Roy Orbison’s classic Crying.

A prize if you could have named the singer… Cynthia Johnson, who doesn’t appear in either of the official videos for the song. This isn’t one of them.
