Olly Alexander – Dizzy

Those who know me will probably guess I’m not a big Eurovision fan. I can’t remember the last time I watched it. But the UK entry this time around is a pretty decent song.

Olly Alexander, who used to live around the corner from me, always seemed like a pretty decent bloke – though he had to stop coming to the same coffee shop as me after he was besieged by schoolgirls.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of his band (and now solo project) Years And Years but I was a huge fan of the Aids drama It’s A Sin, in which Olly played one of the main characters. So good luck to him.

The song, Dizzy, is an exuberant slice of hi-NRG dance music with a kind of Moroder-lite production by Danny L Harle, a catchy chorus (well the whole song is basically a chorus) and a spoken-word bit towards the end (echoes of West End Girls) to distract attention just when it might be getting a bit boring.

A bit like the trick when the boys ripped off the girls’ skirts to perform the same function for Bucks Fizz back in 1981. It worked for them so who knows what will happen on 11 May in Malmö.

Perhaps the unthinkable will happen. I might even watch it to cheer Olly on to victory. Or not.
