The Courettes – Shake!

Five years ago one of my colleagues at Louder Than War told anyone who was willing to listen that The Courettes would become their new favourite band if they would only listen to them.

For reference points, they suggested a cross between the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and The Cramps, fronted by Ronnie Spector.

By rights The Courettes should by now be sitting astride the world surveying a mountain of gold and platinum discs engraved with their name.

That they are not is nothing short of a disgrace.

This is their new single, Shake, and once again the sensible response is to suppose that it must be on top of music charts everywhere.

It’s not entirely dissimilar to (or from) Start by The Jam, but with added fuzz, and a gloriously skronky guitar solo that Weller could only dream of playing; and none the worse for that.

So who are The Courettes? Well, they’re a garage duo with a singer/guitarist from Brazil (Flavia Couri) and a drummer from Denmark (her husband Martin Couri) whose stripped-back no-frills garage punk is matched to melodies that evoke ’60s girl groups and surf groups with a psychedelic edge.

They met in Brazil but the group began life in Denmark and have recorded in the UK, preferring the all-analogue Toe Rag Studios in Hackney.
