This tune was released on Syd Nathan’s legendary King label in Cincinnatti four years after they put out James Brown’s landmark first hit Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag in 1965.

Nathan understandably spent subsequent years trying to recreate that magic, and he came damn close with this number by The Presidents.

Driven along by that bass, those horns… that soulful vocal channelling James Brown, complete with little screams, and the call and response with the backing singers.

Then you flip it over and find the slow-burning ballad I Want My Baby – completely different, with a falsetto vocal, but every bit as good.
