Thurston Moore – Isadora

5th March 2023 · 2020s, 2023, Music

There are some guitarists, only a handful, whose playing – whose tone – appeals so much that I can listen to almost anything by them, just to hear them play. Thurston Moore is one of those.

He’s also one of my neighbourhood’s local characters, a tall floppy-haired figure often seen wandering along Church Street or waiting for the 73 bus, and has his own second-hand record shop – Ecstatic Peace Library – in an old stables around the corner.

I was never that familiar with Sonic Youth, though I have a 12-inch copy of their 1984 debut single Death Valley ’69, with its blank B-side engraved with a line drawing. And I did end up buying their best known album Daydream Nation, if only for the cover of Gerhard Richter’s candle.

Anyway, since enjoying a pint or two of Guinness with him and Richard Boon at the Auld Shillelagh, and discovering him to be an erudite polymath, I have taken an interest in his recent solo work, and particularly enjoyed his 2020 album By The Fire, with its blend of krautrock, psychedelia and primal rock’n’roll.

This is his latest tune, an ode to his long-time muse Isadora Duncan recorded with his usual London-based group of bassist Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine), guitarist James Sedwards (Nøught), percussionist Jem Doulton (Róisín Murphy) and electronic music wizard Jon Leidecker (Negativland), with lyrics by London-based poet Radieux Radio.

The female figure in the video is the American actress, musician, dancer and choreographer Skye Ferrerira, a fellow fan of Isadora Duncan who created this “digital diary” for the video.
