I’ll admit I knew nothing about Zamrock – the musical fusion that came out of Zambia in the 1970s. So I never heard WITCH in their heyday.
I wonder whether my friend Natasha Zukas, who grew up there, might know their back catalogue rather better.
Blending funk and rock with a psychedelic tinge, they made their debut in 1972 and became huge stars in their native land before fading away in the mid-Eighties.
A decade ago they reunited and went back on tour – and this year they released Zango, their first new album in 40 years. It included contributions from fellow Zambian artists such as Sampa the Great and Theresa Ng’ambi.
The name WITCH, by the way, is an acronym… for We Intend To Cause Havoc.
