Topographies are a new band to me, though there’s a familiar undercurrent in the shimmering shoegaze sound of their dreamy darkwave.
That may well be because of the front man, multi-instrumentalist Gray Tolhurst, who turns out to be the son of Lol, original drummer of The Cure. It’s not too much of a stretch to imagine dad’s band playing this song.
Gray formed the trio Topographies in San Francisco in 2018 with Justin Oronos (bass), and Jeremie Ruest (guitar) though their sound owes as much drum machines and synths.
They’ve been making a name for themselves with their brooding sonic palette and cinematic live shows.
And that’s about all I can tell you about them except that Tolhurst, who started out releasing ambient experiments – and an eponymous solo album – on which he plays guitar, banjo, piano, pump organ, bass, synths, harmonium and mellotron, lives in an old convent in the Bay Area.
Not that it matters, because the only important thing is that you can listen to them:
