Suzi Quatro and Chris Norman teamed up for a Glam double-act when they sang this catchy Chinnichap number, Stumblin’ In.
When this cheesy romantic duet came out in 1978 I was a diehard punk and, despite a teenage crush on Suzi Quatro (and a soft spot for Smokie), I would never have admitted liking it.
All these years later, of course, it’s a guilty pleasure.
Like nearly every song composed by Chapman and Chinn it’s contagious: an absolute banger (as nobody said then) and an irrepressible earworm (ditto).
I love this clip because Suzi and Chris Norman, the singer from Smokie with the aptly smoky rasp, act it out like starcrossed lovers.
They weren’t… but apparently Chapman, who wrote hits for both artists, was at a party in Dusseldorff where they were singing together at a party, Suzi on bass and Chris with his arm around her shoulders.
“I thought what a fantastic duet they’d make because they looked so great together,” he recalled. “The next day I was in the studio with Suzi and during a break I came up with the line, ‘Our love is alive’…
“I looked at Suzi and said ‘What about this, with you and Chris? Wouldn’t it be great?’ – and she said it sounded fantastic.”
Strangely, although I remember it so well, the single wasn’t technically a hit in the UK, peaking at No.41 but did better in America, reaching No.4 – giving Suzi her only US hit single.
And it got a new lease of life when it featured in Paul Thomas Anderson’s coming-of-age comedy Licorice Pizza a few years ago.
