The Rolling Stones – It’s Only Rock’n’Roll (demo)

13th October 2025 · 1970s, 1974, Music, Rock'n'Roll

This was always one of my favourite Stones songs, and this is the moment it was kicked into life – at Ronnie Wood’s house.

The only Rolling Stone on this ramshackle demo version is Jagger. And it’s the only Rolling Stones song to feature David Bowie.

It was recorded at Wood’s house, The Wick, in Richmond in 1974 – before Ronnie replaced Mick Taylor in the Stones.

Ronnie plays acoustic 12-string and lead guitar, and is joined by Bowie on backing vocals and acoustic guitar, Willie Weeks on bass and Kenney Jones on drums.

The session was so successful that Charlie Watts gave his blessing to keep the drum track played by Jones on the version eventually released as a single, and on the album of the same name.

Apparently, Jones later apologised to Watts, who told him: “No need – it’s a great drum track” – and Jones replied: “I just tried to play like you!”

Wood’s 12-string acoustic guitar (which you can hear in the left channel, while Bowie’s is on the right) was also kept, although Keith Richards subsequently recorded over all the electric part, and Ian Stewart added a piano part in the studio.

Mick Taylor, who left the Stones after the recording of the album, does not play on the finished version at all.
