Soft Cell – Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

26th November 2025 · 1980s, 1982, Electro, Music

Soft Cell’s biggest hit was the inevitable play-out song at the funeral of Dave Ball. It was never going to be anything else.

Yesterday was an emotional day. First to Golders Green Crematorium for Dave’s funeral, then down to one of his favourite watering holes, The Black Prince in Kennington.

The service, attended by both his musical partners – Marc and Richard – as well as his ex-wife Gini and four children, was lovely and low-key (apart from the neon ‘Dave Ball’ echoing the first album cover).

Marc kept the lowest of profiles and didn’t speak at the service or attend the wake; his great friends Dave Chambers – “Little Dave” to DB’s “Big Dave” –  and Chris Smith (also his manager) delivered eulogies perfectly capturing his character as man and musician.

Chris reminded us how Dave got rid of what was, in the early days of Soft Cell, his trademark ‘tache in 1982 after Freddie Mercury informed him it was a sure sign he and Marc were lovers.

Before we all headed south to Dave’s home turf in Kennington to celebrate his life in his local boozer in the manner he would have hoped for, the ceremony ended with the PA playing this song. It was never going to be anything else.

Here’s the video, featuring a starring role for Dave at his most suave and svelte… and that ‘tache. You can see what Freddie meant.

Farewell DB.
