This must rank as one of the unlikeliest musical collaborations ever – soul brother Jermaine Jackson and jerky New Wave weirdoes Devo.
Apparently Jackson was a big fan of the band from Akron, Ohio, and enjoyed watching their “off the wall” music videos with his brothers.
And in 1982 he had reached a point in his career where he wanted to explore “modern music” and gave them a call.
Not surprisingly, Devo suspected some sort of prank when they received a call from someone purporting to be Jackson, seeking to play and record together.
Fortunately, uncommon sense prevailed, and here it is. There’s even a live version on YouTube, with Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale appearing as “Spud Devo” and “Pud Devo” – but it’s of such poor quality that I’m posting the studio version.
