Betty Davis is so hot you might need to stand back. And so is the funky groove of Your Mama Wants Ya Back.
It’s ironic that people tend to see her as overshadowed by her husband – Miles Davis – because in many ways Betty was a bigger influence on him than vice-versa.
It was she who introduced the jazz legend to groovy fashions and psychedelic rock by introducing him to her cool friends like Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, resulting in transformative albums like Bitches Brew.
Her circle of cool friends meant that this tune has an all-star musical line-up drawn from Sly & The Family Stone, Graham Central Station and Tower Of Power.
That fat bassline is played by Larry Graham, laying down the rhythm with funky drummer Gregg Errico – both of them from the Family Stone – with Neal Schon from Santana and Journey on guitar.
More drums and percussion comes from GCS’s Patryce Banks and Willie Sparks, while the horns are played by Greg Adams and Mic Gillette from Tower Of Power – and those backing vocals are by The Pointer Sisters.
