Sometimes a bassline just hits the spot – right there in the gut – and carries the whole song.

This is an example by Bill Brewster, who calls this tune “funky chuggy disco.”

It’s taken from the splendidly titled Frottage Cheese EP by Brewster, esteemed author of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life and the almost-as-indispensible How To DJ (Properly).

There are cosmic swirls and whooshes and twangs and euphoric choral bits and a Kraftwerky ascending synth bit in there but what you’ll remember is that bassline.

The four-track EP came out on Chris Massey’s Manchester-based Sprechen label in 2019.
