An essential reggae rarity from Billy Joe Morgan, an obscure one-hit wonder who left us with this classic tune, Stop Them.

I love this tune, which has prompted one of my all-time favourite comments on YouTube: “The bass is so sick I had to give it a couple of Ibuprofen and tuck it up in bed.”

Once again, I don’t know a thing about Billy Joe Morgan, who doesn’t seem to have made a single other record. He could be forgiven if he thought he would never be able to top this one, which came out on a New York label in 1980.

What I love most is the floating sax melody and the primitive rattling of the drums, which come even more to the fore on the especially excellent dub, featuring that ‘creaky door’ sound that was a hallmark of so many Joe Gibbs productions. Along with Billy’s sweet soulful voice.
