Definitely my favourite Buzzcocks single; definitely one of the best punk singles of all time. I always thought Buzzcocks were the most ‘poppy’ of the punk bands, and in my naivety I imagined they would go on to top the charts for years.

After the cult success of Spiral Scratch earned them a move to a major label, it was a brave move for United Artists to open their account with a hymn to masturbation.

I still love the way it bursts out of the speakers: “Well you tried it just for once / Found it all right for kicks / But now you’ve found out / It’s a habit that sticks / You’re an orgasm addict.”

Released in October 1977, it didn’t get played on the radio, what with its undisguised subject matter (“beating your meat to a pulp”), and the rude words (“It’s a labour of love fucking yourself to death” / “Johnny want fucky”).

Not to mention the piece de resistance of Pete Shelley’s simulated orgasm. All of which understandably kept it out of the Top 40.

As a song it’s just perfect: the intro, the tune, the lyrics, the singing, the chorus, the middle eight… the lot.

In fact Buzzcocks never had a single Top Ten hit and their biggest was Ever Fallen In Love, which reached no.12 a year after this.
