Here’s a slice of vintage funk from the streets of the motor city. Except it’s not. D/Troit are an all-white funk revival outfit from… Copenhagen.
Just check out front man Toke Bo Nisted, who seems to be infected by the spirit of James Brown – grunts and all – as he sings, with some justification: “It ain’t no black thing, it ain’t no white thing… Baby, baby, baby, it’s a soul thing.”
Craig Charles has been all over these five Danish guys since discovering their EP Do The Right Thing almost a decade ago, declaring them to be his favourite new band. And he knows a thing or two about funk and soul.
In 2016 D/troit won Best New Band at the Scandinavian Soul Music Awards (who knew!) in Stockholm and their song Soul Thing was used in a beer commercial, giving their music global exposure.
The group has moved on a bit since then and has a great new album, Instrumentals Volume 1, released on Crunchy Frog Records – a reason on its own to be interested!
New single 2.30am Get Down, featuring the DJ vocals of Mick Collins advising us not to take the brown acid (the famous announcement at the original Woodstock Festival), is another banger. Hear it below:
