Fun Boy Three – Tunnel Of Love

7th September 2024 · 1980s, 1983, Music

I was sad when The Specials fell apart: they had been such a part of my life for what they represented as much as their music. But it didn’t take long to fall in love again with the Fun Boy Three.

This came from the trio’s second album, which once again bore no vestige of the bouncy ska with which they had stamped their mark on music and prompted the political awakening of a generation of teens.

Produced by David Byrne, Waiting fleshed out their sparse tribal percussion with cello, trombone and orchestral flourishes and introduced gorgeous melodies like Our Lips Are Sealed – co-written by Terry with Jane Wiedlin and already a hit for The Go-Go’s.

None more so than this one, which also boasts my favourite of Terry Hall’s lyrics in what is a sort of cynical sequel to Squeeze’s kitchen sink drama Up The Junction.

Optimism was never Terry’s default position; he was one of the most lugubrious characters I ever met, though there was always a deadpan humour lurking within his personality, and his lyrics.

His performance here is wonderfully typical of his stage persona: standing stock still in his suit, looking dolefully up towards the camera as he sings, straight-faced to the very end.
