Horace Andy – Skylarking

9th July 2022 · 1970s, 1972, 1973, Music, Reggae

For Jamaicans, and an older generation of fans, Horace Andy is one of the legendary reggae singers from Jamaica. For a younger one, he’s synonymous with Bristol as the guest vocalist on some of Massive Attack’s best tunes.

This is one of his earlier songs, and I’ve never been able to make up my mind which version I like best.

The first one, here, is recorded in a breezy rocksteady style in 1972 at Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One with the house band led by Heptones singer Leroy Sibbles on bass, Ernest Ranglin on guitar, Jackie Mittoo on keyboards and Leroy ‘Horsemouth’ Wallace on drums.

I love the way the sax weaves its way through the tune, lending it a lightness that sets it apart from the later reggae version.

Recorded just a year later, it was produced by Bunny Lee and played by The Aggrovators, with a classic King Tubby dub.

Which one is better? It’s hard to say, and they’re both so different in mood. Luckily we don’t have to choose because you can hear them both right here – Bunny Lee version below.
