Johnny Andrews & The Enjoyments – If I Lost Your Love

This came out in 1977 when I was pogoing in a seedy cellar somewhere to a snotty young band that sounded nothing like this. But if you love soppy soul ballads, with a sweet singer emoting at the top of his range and backing vocalists echoing his heartfelt words back at him, then this is for you.

Personally, I have a longstanding aversion to the flute – jazz or otherwise – which prevents me falling fully for this. But damn, it’s hard not to be sucked into the sentimentality of it all.

And not just because when it begins, you think it’s going to become Aaron Neville’s matchless Tell It Like It Is.

I cannot find out a darn thing about Johnny Andrews, or The Enjoyments, except that I found another tune, I Can’t Believe, which is a B-side in exactly the same soppy vein.

And when Johnny wasn’t around, it seems that The Enjoyments recorded with another lead singer, Patrick Myers
