La Luz – Brainwash

21st July 2023 · 2010s, 2013, California, Music

La Luz sound as if they should come from somewhere by the sea in sunny SoCal but actually come from rainy Seattle… though they did once record an album in a California surfboard shop, and now live there.

The all-female quartet must have brightened up any day in the Pacific North West with their shimmering blend of Sixties girl group pop, surf guitar, psych-tinged garage rock and doo wop vocals.

They were formed there by songwriter and guitarist Shana Cleveland back in 2012, recruiting Marian Li-Pino, her former bandmate in The Curious Mystery, on drums, Alice Sandahl on keyboards and Abbey Blackwell on bass; all four of them sharing vocals.

They released their first album in 2013 but, after touring to support it, they were injured when their van skidded off the road on black ice returnign from a gig and Blackwell left the band, replaced by Lena Simon on bass.

La Luz have recorded variously with indie rockers Ty Segall (Weirdo Shrine) and Dan Auerbach of Black Keys (Floating Features), and hip-hop/jazz producer Adrian Younge, who helmed their most recent self-titled album, a more polished affair, following the departure of Li-Pino.

This song, though, is a single from back in 2013, when it was released on Suicide Squeeze Records.
