Lloyd Cole & The Commotions – Rattlesnakes

6th October 2026 · 1980s, 1984, Music

Farewell then Eva Marie Saint, immortalised not just in celluloid On The Waterfront but in Lloyd Cole’s song a quarter of a century later.

She gets a namecheck, albeit mispronounced, in the title tune of Lloyd Cole & The Commotions’ debut album Rattlesnakes. Not that she appreciated it herself.

When asked, the American actress said she had never heard the song, and never heard of the group who recorded it. Not so surprising considering she was born in 1924, long before pop music was invented.

Eva Marie Saint, who came from New Jersey rather than France – a mistake listeners to the song might easily have jumped to – made her screen debut in On The Waterfront in 1959 alongside Marlon Brando.

She was also the luminous star of Hitchcock’s suspense classic North By Northwest who gets rescued by Cary Grant while hanging by her fingertips from Mount Rushmore in the famous closing scene.

When he came along in the early Eighties, Lloyd Cole was almost a hybrid of Dylan’s twangy mid-60s period and the country-tinged moments of Lou Reed with the Velvets.
