Magazine – Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)

2nd August 2024 · 1980, 1980s, Music, Postpunk

Who would have thought a pasty-faced weirdo and his Manchester mates could create something as funky as Sly Stone’s original? Yet that’s exactly what Magazine manage to do.

And they do it while weirdifying Sly’s minimalist funk jam into new shapes and taking it to new places with Martin Hannett in the producer’s chair.

Barry Adamson’s bass, as funky as anything George Clinton could conjure, underpins everything, but it’s the keyboards of Dave Formula that define this version, and Laura Teresa’s backing vocals play a key role.

There’s not much space for John McGeoch, which might explain why he left to join the Banshees soon after this was released on Magazine’s third album The Correct Use Of Soap in 1980.

It’s remarkable how far they transitioned from the punk beginnings of Buzzcocks through the postpunk of Real Life and the wintry soundscapes of Secondhand Daylight.
