Michigan & Smiley – Diseases

23rd September 1981 · 1970s, 1980s, 1981, Music, Reggae

Back to 1981 for a topical take on the perils of dangerous diseases by Anthony Fairclough and Erroll Bennett, aka Papa Michigan and General Smiley.

Early stars of the dancehall era, their first hit Rub A Dub was actually a Studio One production, re-using an Alton Ellis riddim from the rocksteady era.

This one, backed by Roots Radics, the go-to backing band of the late Seventies and early Eighties, was recorded at Channel One, with an especially nice dub by Scientist in the classic Joe Gibbs style, heavy on the echo chamber.

The song’s an Old Testament warning to girls who displease Jah by wearing trousers rather than dresses and blouses, and exhibit their vanity by displaying jewellery.

Consequently, Jah is going to strike them down with a range of dangerous  diseases, from polio and arthritis to elephantitis and poliomyelitis. Which seems a little harsh for wearing a necklace.
