My Ugly Clementine – Feet Up

Austrian supergroup My Pretty Clementine put Vienna back on the musical map for the first time in a couple of centuries.

There’s no denying Vienna has one of the richest musical histories in Europe but it’s been a while, to say the least. But it’s been a while…

The city’s heyday came in the 18th and 19th centuries – Schubert and Strauss, Bruckner and Brahms, Mozart and Haydn.

Then there was that moment with Ultravox. But, well, that meant nothing to me.

Now say hello to My Ugly Clementine, the female trio responsible for this excellent slice of summer fun celebrating sloth and the pleasures of boredom – or, at least, taking it easy.

“After our shows we love to just hang out in the backstage area, sipping gin and tonics and playing board games,” says fun-loving singer Sophie Lindinger.

My Ugly Clementine are in fact an Austrian supergroup. Lindinger has had significant success in Europe, if not here, as one half of an electropop-oriented duo called Leyya.

She is joined in the group by Mira Lu Kovacs, a successful solo songwriter and musician in her own right, and Nastasja Ronck, who also plays with a big Austrian indie band called Sharktank.

Their eye-catching video knowingly parodies a whole bunch of pop videos from the nineties and noughties, as well as taking a dig at the music biz attitude towards women in bands – with an exec suggesting they change their name to My PRETTY Clementine.

Shot on the streets of Vienna, I can’t help being struck by the fact that the locals seem not to bat an eyelid at the sight of three naked girls running around the city streets; I imagine they would be assailed by Karens if they tried it here.
