Nina Simone – Funkier Than A Mosquita’s Tweeter

22nd August 2023 · 1970s, 1974, Funk, Music

I don’t know how you can make a song sound this funky with little more than a bunch of drums from Africa and Asia. But dammit, Nina Simone can. And she did.

Specifically, she did it at New York’s Philharmonic Hall in July 1973 and it came out the following year on a live album called It Is Finished.

The song, about a male predator – “nuthin’ but a dirty, dirty old man” – was written by Tina Turner’s sister Alline Bullock and first appeared on Ike & Tina’s 1970 album Workin’ Together, sung by Tina and the Ikettes.

It was also the B-side of their single Proud Mary in 1971 but over the years Nina Simone’s version, her vocal scathingly suggesting the “dirty old man” of the intro could be a metaphor for the US of A itself; or so it has been suggested.

Anyway, here it is. And, below, is Tina’s original version – very different, just as funky; just as good.
