If there’s one artist I wish I’d seen live more than any other, it’s probably Nina Simone. Especially when she was a regular at Ronnie Scott’s in the 1980s. Except I had probably not heard of her back then.
I don’t think I heard of her until that 1987 TV ad using My Baby Just Cares For Me – recorded 30 years earlier – gave her a hit single, thanks largely to a clever animated video.
I don’t think I would have liked to see her in later years, after she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and earned a reputation for drunken aggression, hectoring audience members and walking offstage.
That’s certainly not the case here.
Nina’s 1965 appearance at the Antibes Jazz Festival came at the height of her Civil Rights activism and fresh from leaving an indelible mark with her racial equality anthem Mississippi Goddam.
