Pastor T.L. Barrett & The Youth For Christ Choir – Nobody Knows

31st July 2022 · 1970s, 1971, Music, Soul

This is what used to be called a “Negro Spiritual” dating back to slavery days in the USA. It was first published in 1867 and I think the first recording was by Marian Anderson in 1925.

It has since been covered by artists including Louis Armistrong, Paul Robeson and Sam Cooke.
This version is by Pastor T.L. Barrett & the Youth For Christ Choir, released in 1971.

Barrett preached at his own church on Chicago’s South Side, recording gospel music with his children’s choir. He’s been sampled by Kanye (Father I Stretch My Hands) and this tune has been recorded by a rapper called Copywrite (Trouble).

It’s his version I first heard during an episode of Better Things.
