Saint Etienne changed direction from their ambient dance style to a retro Sixties vibe on You’re In A Bad Way.

Here’s another sunny scorcher so it’s time for another blast of carefree summer fun. And summer fun doesn’t get more carefree than this. The Sixties-styled video is a perfect fit for the breezy retro tone of the song, with Sarah Cracknell’s breathy vocal floating over the music.

For added nostlgia there’s a retro reference to watching Bruce Forsyth on The Generation Game, and the plinkety-plink of the toy piano solo by Bob Stanley is the icing on the cake.

Yet for all its summery Motown vibes, the song was originally released in mid-winter, in February 1993 as the second single from their second album So Tough – sequel to the brilliant debut Foxbase Alpha.

It was a deliberate contrast to their almost-ambient dance stylings with which they made their name – most notably the Neil Young cover Only Love Can Break Your Heart.

Songwriter Stanley later said he had written it in ten minutes as an imitation of Herman’s Hermits, who had made one of the first singles I ever bought (Something Is Happening).

Initially intended to be the B-side of another song, Everlasting, their record company Heavenly had other ideas and made it a single in its own right. Good decision, as it became one of the group’s biggest hits, reaching No.12 in the singles chart.

I now find there were two different music videos for the song: this mock-up of a Sixties TV game show, with scantily-clad dancers and retro home furnishings, and the other a low-budget affair with split-screen photography of the band performing in a blank space.
