SBT – 13th St. #2

Last night I went to see Sarabeth Tucek at The Lexington. And the song I most wanted to hear was this autobiographical number about her childhood.

On her latest album Joan Of All there’s a full-band version – 13th St. #1 – and that’s the stand-out track for me, and was the stand-out song at her gig.

But I equally love this stripped-back take with acoustic guitar and organ, which channels the Velvets even more than the other one. By the end of it you could actually think you’re listening to Heroin, while she reminisces about a youth spent listening to Coney Island Baby.

SBT didn’t disappoint, apart from having to cut about half an hour out of her set because of some third-on-the-bill bloke in his 50s or 60s with an acoustic guitar who apparently played for about an hour to a tiny audience that probably consisted mostly of his friends.

He was so bad I had to leave after about two minutes – and because of the 11 o’clock curfew at the Lex she had to cut five songs out of her set. So thanks for that mate.

Instead I shall be listening again to her album, which is very much one of my favourites of the year.
