Showaddywaddy – Hey Rock And Roll

No sooner had the full falsetto horrror of The Rubettes begun to fade than along came another rock’n’roll revival outfit – the equally abysmal Showaddywaddy.

What was unusual about them was they had two singers, two guitarists, two bass guitarists and two drummers. It’s almost as if someone had taken two groups of four and put them together to make one bigger group.

And they had.

As unlikely as it sounds, Showaddywaddy were an amalgamation of two quartets, the terribly named Golden Hammers and the curiously named Choise, who both played at the same Leicester pub.

I’m guessing it was a pub popular with Teddy Boys because they dressed as Fifties-style Teds in colour-co-ordinated drapes, but sported Seventies-style long hair, leaving the quiffs and sideburns to Alvin Stardust.

Their sound was a pastiche of Fifties and Sixties rock’n’roll, with added Glam foot-stomping and hand-clapping, with vocals somewhere between an Elvis and Buddy Holly, and anthemic singalong choruses.

Showaddywaddy came to fame on a TV talent show called New Faces (runners-up in December 1973) and had an immediate hit when their first single, Hey Rock And Roll, went to no.2.
