Sinéad O’Connor – Chiquitita

Who knew Sinéad O’Connor had covered ABBA?! I mean, probably thousands of people, if not more – but not me. Until now.

This video – more of a short film – is a literal kitchen sink drama, with Sinéad singing as she does the dishes (we’ve all been there!) and making herself a pot of tea.

Director Sophie Muller, who has made more music videos than you could possibly name, including many of the all time greats, adds a charmingly surreal twist at the very end.

As for the song, it’s lovely, of course, because Sinead’s velvet voice makes everything lovely; and because Chiquitita is such a good song, even if it’s not one of the Swedes’ best.

The Irish singer takes their ode of consolation to a heartbroken friend and fills it with a sense of melancholy tinged with hope, because it is at heart an optimistic song.

I now learn that Chiquitita was inspired by Simon & Garfunkel’s Latin-flavoured song El Condor Pasa and began life under the title In The Arms Of Rosalita.

Björn subsequently changed the name, and the lyric – initially to Chiquitita Angelina – and infused the lyrics with a sense of comfort and encouragement.

It was first performed at a UNICEF concert in January 1979 and the band donated 50% of sales (later increased to 100%) to the charity, for whom it has raised more than £4 million.
