Snap! – The Power

18th December 2025 · 1990, 1990s, Dance

It’s impossible not to love Snap!’s hybrid of hip-hop, house, soul and a dash of heavy rock. It kicked off the whole dance music scene when it topped the charts in early 1990.

When it comes to Eurodance anthems, few songs are more memorable.

There’s that novelty intro with the German scientist, then the huge guitar riff, and the big soul voice proclaiming: “I’ve got the power!” before the rap kicks in over a shuffling beat (sampled from Doug Lazy’s Let It Roll) and uplifting gospel vocals.

As with all Eurodance, Snap! is not so much a group as a shadowy studio affair, concocted by the traditional two older German men, Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti, working behind the scenes.

Convinced that the public might not welcome German musicians, they adopted the pseudonyms Benito Benites and John “Virgo” Garrett III, which is just baffling – and makes me wonder whether John was snooker loopy.

That powerful female vocal is by American singer Penny Ford, a former backing singer with The Gap Band who was living in Germany at the time, but in the video her vocals are mimed by another singer, Jackie Harris.

The rapper is Turbo B (real name Maurice Buttler), who had served in the US Army in Germany and had once been a heavy metal drummer back in Pennsylvania. He also featured on Snap!’s second chart topper, Rhythm Is A Dancer.

The Power topped charts all over Europe (and Zimbabwe!) and reached No.2 in America, famously resistant to dance music, showing the universal appeal of a good song.

That spoken-word bit at the beginning is a Russian scientist talking about the production of a voice-controlled ‘Personal Companion’ computer for the blind by a US company called Transceptor Technologies.
