Tena Stelin – Jah Equity

Tena Stelin is a UK singer who was a pioneer of the roots revival that began in reggae music at the end of the 1980s. This was his first release.

I didn’t know roots reggae tunes like this were still being made in 1989. Probably because I no longer hung out in clubs that played dub plates as I had in my youth.

By the late Eighties The Four Aces in Dalston, where I had been given my reggae education, was populated by a very different crowd after being transformed into a temple of rave called Labyrinth.

So I missed out on some good stuff, including this 12-inch by Tena Stelin on a UK label rejoicing in the name of WAU! Mr Modo Recordings.

Growing up in London on his father’s ska and rocksteady collection, he remembers making up words to the versions on the B-side when he was as young as six years old.

So it was a natural progression when he returned from a trip to Jamaica in his late teens and began to sing over tunes on sound systems in London.

Next thing he was singing on an album called Wicked Invention for the Menasseh sound system, which had initially been created for the Notting Hill Carnival, and this tune was put out as a single.
