Here’s a slice of steamy funk for these cooler days and nights, courtesy of Aussie band The Bamboos and British singer Alice Russell
The Bamboos, who got together at the turn of the century, are famed as Australia s premier instrumental deep funk outfit and are favourites of Craig Charles, who knows his funk (and soul) as well as anyone.
Russell is the daughter of an organist, and grew up in funky Framlingham in Suffolk, playing the cello and singing in choirs before discovering Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin.
Back in 2004 she toured Australia and New Zealand with The Bamboos before a chance meeting between main man Lance Ferguson and an A&R man in a Brighton club led to the Australian band being signed to a UK label.
A second joint tour of Australasia, with British funkster William Holland’s Quantic Soul Orchestra, led to Russell recording two vocal tunes – including this one – tor their debut album.
