The Band AKA – Grace

24th June 2025 · 1980s, 1981, Funk, Music

This exuberant disco-funk anthem completely passed me by at the time. I was listening to very different music when it came out in 1981.

It was the first of two UK hits – Grace and Joy – for The Band AKA, a vocal/instrumental group of session musicians based in LA.

They were essentially the creation of their producer and songwriter Jaeson James Jarrett and membership of the band was fluid throughout their brief existence.

Grace was a dancefloor favourite and became a minor hit in 1981, stalling just outside the Top 40, with the 12″ single featuring a memorable saxophone solo by Jimmy Carter (no, not him).

The same formula was used to record the equally great follow-up Joy, which did a little better, reaching No.24 in the singles chart, but would prove to be their only hit.

That was pretty much the last we heard of the band, who split up towards the end of the Eighties after making three albums – The Band, Men Of Music and Master Of The Game – leaving us with these two singles, a delicious funk anthem called Funk Down and a soulful RnB ballad, When You Believe In Love.
