The Barracudas – Summer Fun

15th June 2023 · 1980, 1980s, Music, Punk

The Barracudas’ only hit is almost perfect: a punk-propelled pastiche of a Sixties surf-pop song, complete with that opening radio ad to set the scene.

I was going to ask rhetorically why it asn’t a hit… then I discovered it reached the dizzy heights of No.37 back in 1980. Within a year The Barracuas had broken up, having formed in 1978 at a Dead Fingers Talk concert.

I used to see The Barracudas a lot, and I was friendly with their Canadian front man Jeremy Gluck. They were a powerful proposition, recreating the sound of those psych-tinged garage bands of the ’60s like The Seeds and The 13th Floor Elevators.

I see now that they reformed in 2005 with Chris Wilson, former lead singer of the Flamin’ Groovies – one of their more obvious influences – at the helm.

I don’t think they made much more of an impression the second time around but who cares when they gave us this glorious slice of summer fun.
