The Breeders began life as a side project of Pixies and Throwing Muses and broke into the mainstream with second album Last Splash.
Kim Deal’s snarling rasp of a voice is rather wonderfully described by someone in the YouTube comments: “She sounds like a 12 year old that’s been smoking three packs of cigarettes for 30 years somehow.”
I have to confess that while I was blown away by Cannonball, I never listened to a whole album by The Breeders, probably because they came along just as I started a family.
And partially because they seemed initially like a side project – which they were, to be fair – an offshoot of Pixies (bassist Kim Deal) and Throwing Muses (guitarist Tanya Donelly).
I need to rectify that, and I’m starting with their breakthrough second album Last Splash, from which this song is taken, with its elements of three genres I love – country, surf and reggae – incorporated into their noisy grunge.
By the time they recorded their follow-up to the debut album Pod in 1993, Kim had switched to rhythm guitar with her twin sister Kelley coming in on lead guitar, with Josephine Wiggs on bass and drummer Jim Macpherson.
Trivia fact: Kelley brought her sewing machine to the studio during recording so that she could spend down time making a quilt.
