The Chats – Smoko

29th May 2023 · 2010s, 2017, Music, Punk

Is this the most Australian thing you’ve ever seen and heard? I remember it from the time but I’m still laughing at the video, which went viral in 2017 because… well, watch it and you’ll see.

It really is the most Aussie thing you’ll ever watch, and it’s picked up more than 18 million views. Rightly so.

It helps if you know that the title – “Smoko” – is Aussie slang for a smoke break at work, such as the one being enjoyed by the band on a construction site at the start of the video.

And that “Cenno” – referred to in the second verse – is the nickname for the benefits system (Centrelink), and its unemployment cheques.

Apart from that it’s all pretty self-explanatory: just a classic punk tune about the drudgery of work and the drudgery of unemployment – though, as with all punk tunes, it’s all about the attitude.

It’s a hard-hearted and humourless viewer who doesn’t crack up at the guy with the ginger mullet – singer and bass guitarist Eamon Sandwith.

He’s the one dressed in a lifeguard uniform as he goes about his day from beer for breakfast to watching a surfer drown because he’s “on smoko.”

Hilarious.
