The Congos – Congoman / Congoman Chant

28th September 1977 · 1970s, 1977, Music, Reggae

The Congos had a hypnotic trance-like quality to their chants that comes as close as anything in reggae music to mindfulness.

Anyone in the mood for meditation could do a lot worse than lie back, close their eyes and spend the next 12 minutes letting this chant wash over them.

The Congos had more tuneful moments – Fisherman is the go-to song for that – but the tribal beats that anchor this mantra-like chant takes the listener to another dimension.

Lee Perry’s production is subtly (and uncharacteristically) sympathetic, letting the rich harmonies of Cedric Myton’s falsetto and Roy ‘Ashanti’ Johnson’s warm tenor take centre stage.

The album Heart Of The Congos, recorded in 1977 but not given a full release until the superb Blood & Fire reissue 20 years later, remains one of the essential reggae classics.

Mindfulness decades before the term had been invented.
